| New Year parade to help families |
| |
The New Year's Day parade in London is aiming to help families start the year healthily, organisers have revealed.
More than 500,000 revellers are set to pack the capital's streets to watch the free spectacular, with 2009 set to be the biggest and best in the event's 23-year history.
Some 23 London boroughs - including the host area, City of Westminster - will enter the Let's Help London Challenge and fight it out for a slice of a £30,000 prize fund for their chosen charity.
On top of that, organisers have teamed up with sponsors Nicorette and PruHealth to help visitors kick off the year off by giving up smoking and improving their health.
Health professionals will be staffing a Nicorette mobile clinic to help people attempting to kick the habit, while private healthcare company PruHealth will give advice about health insurance.
More than 10,000 performers, including 25 marching bands and 1,000 cheerleaders from the US, will entertain the crowds who flock to the 2.2-mile route.
Vintage cars, bell ringers, clowns and musicians are among other highlights in the carnival, which will be seen by millions around the world who tune in to watch the traditional event on TV.
